From Winnie the Pooh to Yogi Bear and Boo Boo, cute bears have long been a staple in children's cartoons.
The fascination with cartoon bears may go back as far as 1902, when President Theodore Roosevelt went bear hunting in Mississippi. Some of his hunting companions caught a bear cub and tied it to a tree, offering to let the president shoot it as a hunting trophy. He refused to harm the helpless animal, and his compassion was immortalized in a cartoon published in a Washington newspaper. Plush toy bears soon came to be called "Teddy bears" in the president's honor.

You don't need any special tools or skills. All you will need is a pencil and a piece of paper. You may also want to use an eraser to correct any mistakes, and crayons, colored pencils, or markers to shade your finished drawing.
As you follow the steps in this drawing guide, notice the color coding in the accompanying illustrations. New lines made in each step are highlighted in blue, whereas lines made in previous steps are shown in black. You may want to draw your lines lightly at first, as you will need to erase some of your early lines in order to complete the drawing.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Cartoon Bear
Begin by drawing a circle.
Draw a smaller oval overlapping the bottom of the circle.
Draw a small half circle on each side of the original circle to form ears.
Erase the guide lines formed by the original circle, as well as a portion of the small oval.
Draw a larger, irregular circle beneath the original circle.
Draw an oval to the left of the irregular circle.
Draw another oval to the right of the irregular circle.
Using two curved lines to form each leg, connect the ovals to the irregular circle.
Erase the guide lines formed by the circle.
Draw a curved line within the oval of each foot.
Draw a spiraling, curved line, beginning at the nose and overlapping the body.
Draw a series of connected, curved lines overlapping the tip of the hand, to form fingers.
Erase guide lines from the arm, as well as a space between the head and shoulder.
Draw a long, curved line from the bottom of the head to the foot. Draw a small circle within each finger.
Draw a curved line across the bear's belly. Draw a half circle inside each ear. Connect the ends of the right half circle using a short, curved line.
Draw two circles above the nose, and a smaller circle within each circle. Shade between the two circles. Draw a short, thick, curved line above each eye.
Draw an oval for the nose, and a smaller oval within it. Shade between the two ovals. Draw a wide "U" shaped line below the nose. Connect the nose and mouth using a short, curved line.
Draw a large circle in the middle of each foot. Draw several smaller circles above the large circle.
Add texture to the bear's fur by drawing closely spaced, short, curved lines. Draw these lines along the bear's head, his arms and legs, and his stomach.
Color your cartoon bear.
